It has been six decades since I stayed in Paris as a teenager. I lived with a French family in the suburb of Sceaux, taking the train into the center of Paris every weekday for school.
I have been back several times, but not for the last 20 years. I returned in the autumn of 2022 to see my French siblings. We are family once again. I revisited the unknown places of my younger self, including the 13th Arrondissement with its laid back neighborhood called La Butte aux Cailles.
I want to report that the Grand Dame of all cities is more sublime than ever. The venerable Notre Dame Cathedral is being painstakingly rebuilt, but the style and loveliness of the city are the same, perhaps nobler seen through my aging eyes.
